The Como Creek Watershed

The Como Creek watershed encompasses approximately 8.7 km2 in south Coquitlam, a medium sized municipality in the northeastern portion of the Metro Vancouver Regional District in BC.  It includes Como Lake (headwaters of Como Creek), four main tributaries, several significant parks and wildlife corridors as well as a host of residential, commercial and light industrial areas. The watershed flows south from its headwaters at Como Lake Avenue to the Fraser River east of historic Fraser Mills, and is within one of BC’s oldest communities (Maillardville).

The Como watershed has served as the case study for developing the vision, goals and content of the Watershed Wise Program. In a landscape of urban development wild salmon still manage to sustain themselves and a diversity of native fish, wildlife and ecosystems still weave their way through the watershed. The Como watershed exemplifies the challenges of trying to sustain and protect natural values under pressure from increased development pressures and population growth. The Watershed Wise Program also partners with and supports local stewardship activities like those of the Como Watershed Group wherever possible.
